BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Assimilated, Cast Through Time

A graduate of the class of 2407, Rhys had the misfortune of being captured by the Borg during their invasion of the Beta Quadrant in 2409.

That cube had the misfortune of being thrown backwards in time.

Temporal agents caught up with the cube in the year 2230 when the I.K.S. Qu'In 'an bortaS (under the command of Capt. Hauk) traveled through time with the help of agent Daniels to set the timeline straight by capturing the cube to prevent their altering the timeline and liberating the Borg aboard in the process.

Or maybe it is more accurate to say ... to make sure time unfolded as it was supposed to.

Whereas most of those liberated were returned to what was for them the 2400s, one was not allowed to do so ? separated from the others.

"You cannot return to the time you once were," Daniels informed Rhys. "At least not yet."

A Relic of the Fortune, Misplaced in Time

The temporal agent informed Rhys that he was to remain in his current time for a number of years, but that he would one day return for him. ... When the time was right.

And for him to live his life in that time until then as it was what history demanded of him.

For the next few years, Rhys lived in a small cottage in Glasgow, Scotland.

He passed the time expanding his skills by learning about engineering and ship designs.

Even if the designs of that time period were a century or two behind those he once knew.

Whenever someone would ask him about the borg implants surrounding one eye and along the opposite cheek, he would simply reply that they were medical implants resulting from a shuttle training exercise gone wrong.

Rhys also fell in love, and married during this time ... fathering twins.

Starfleet Past

Then came another visit from agent Daniels to inform Rhys that not only were things continuing to unfold as history wished, but that it was time for him to return to Starfleet.

And somehow, Daniels saw to it that Maitland was able to receive his own commission (thanks in part to the Federation-Klingon War of 2256-57 when serving officers were in high demand).

Daniels informed him to follow his instincts and try to overlook what he already knew of this period in history ... acting naturally without thought of what he remembered of that history.

To treat it as the present, which for Rhys in those moments ... it was.

2409 ... Take II

Little did Rhys know that within a year he would again be thrust through time back with others in tow and sent hurling back towards the future he had left behind those years before.

So he returned to the year 2409, but several years older than when he first left it.

In addition to those aboard his ship (those that survived at any rate), other ships from the Battle of Starbase One were thrust through time as well.

Including his wife and her command, but not their children now lost to history.

He also realized something ... a bit more complicated.

How Many Greats in Family?

Because of his children, his family tree now looped back on itself as he himself carried that lineage backwards in time.

And although he was not his own grandfather, it turned out that he was the great grandfather of his best friend from his academy days.

During those earlier years, the pair always through it interesting they shared very similar names, although they could find no ties in genealogy.

That was because Rhys himself and his children were the missing link in their genealogy with his friend having been named after him.  ... after "one of the Maitland clan who died in defense of Starbase One."

Only they didn't die. They lived.

"Having you present in that moment allowed us to lock onto far more of those present who would have died otherwise ... allowing them to travel forward in time with you," Daniels explained.

New Command, New Mission

Although his former command did not survive, Starfleet award he and his crew a new Bozeman-class frigate --- the U.S.S. Goshawk (NCC-31279).
