BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Origins

Mykal Hayden Kaiwolf is a human Druid born in the 23rd century, cast like dice across a game board into the future.

His mother and father, Mari and Trystan Kaiwolf, were both themselves in Starfleet, although neither ever really sought to become more than junior officers (an engineer and science officers) who loved their work.

However, it was Mykal's grandmother, Carolyn Kaiwolf, who raised him on earth as his parents lived life out among the stars.

That's not to say that they deserted their son, only that their careers called for them to be away from the planet of their birth for months at a time.

They would make sure to visit their son whenever they could, both separately and together as time allowed.

And would send for him to join them for weeks at a time aboard their assigned ships ... When allowed.

But for much of his early life, he spent his time wandering the backwoods of Virginia.

It was from his grandmother, who was a member of the Bear Tribe Medicine Society, that Mykal learned to walk the pathways of the natural world, influenced by the ways of the Aniyvwiya (Cherokee) and the Lakota whom he was lucky enough to find elders of that shared some of their wisdom.

Some of his earliest and fondest memories were sitting around the fire, as part of the circle during her full moon ceremonies.

Even today, Mykal can close his eyes and clearly hear the rhythmatic beats of the drum, the sweat smell of the burning cedar (for smudging) and the smell of the smoke from the community fire.

He also remembers what it was like to hold the sacred ceremonial Pipe she carried. ... Not unlike the one he himself bears, yet different as the spirit of each Pipe differs from one to another.

Walking through the forests, however, was where he felt the most at home, and it came to a point that he could feel the living energy of live as it flowed around him.

Wandering in the wilderness taught him appreciation for the natural world around him.

Feeling the energy of the life there ... to appriciate the many forms of life themselves.

He learned to become a druid, but despite the lessons of his grandmother, he still walked a more solitary path, meaning much of what was taught or shared with him sank in was through his own life experiences.

It's how he learned to make it his own.

Finding Starfleet

His parents were only a small part of his decision to apply to Starfleet Academy.

Yes, it was nice to follow in the footsteps of his parents, however, it was the calling of the stars that caused this Druid to leave his beloved wilderness regions for the modern world of Starfleet.

He entered Starfleet and graduated within the top half of his graduating class in 2268 ... better than some, worse than others.

In fact, it should be noted that he actually graduated with Pavel Chekov.

Chekov was high enough in the class rankings that he landed a position on the Constitution-class U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701).

Mykal did not.

He did land a position aboard the U.S.S. Drake (NCC-1381) as a flight control officer.

Another note of interest is that aboard the Drake, he served alongside fellow 2268 graduate, Danyl Hysmith.

He and Hysmith became good friends during their stint together aboard the Drake to the point that when Danyl was given command of a refitted Sombra-class U.S.S. Valkyrie (NCC-1790), he selected Mykal in 2273 for a department head position aboard ship ... Chief Security Officer.

Danyl served aboard the Drake for 4 years, rising in rank, until finally offered a first officer position aboard the Loknar-class U.S.S. Sam Houston (NCC-2845) in 2277.

Five years later, he was offered command of the Sam Houston in 2282 after its previous captain accepted command of Deep Space 14.

It was actually his command of the Sam Houston where Mykal began to shine and gain the notice of those at Starfleet Command.

He commanded the Sam Houston for 6 years, proving himself several times as a capable ship's captain to the point those above him thought the officer ready for something bigger.

In 2293, Starfleet Command promoted him to Commodore and pulled out the center chair of one of their new Matsumoto-class Command Dreadnoughts --- the U.S.S. Excalibur (NCC-5664).

Seven months after launch, the Excalibur was coordinating task force operations near the Shackleton Expanse when a broken distress call came in from their sister ship, the U.S.S. Pendragon (NCC-5883).

Both ships ... Excalibur and Pendragon ... were listed as lost following an extensive search and believed to have fallen victim to the perils of the Sackleton Expanse.

At least until 2408 when both ships reappeared within the Expanse, fully intact with no casualties plus one also intact freighter.

The Pendragon had been seeking to become caught within a gravitational anomaly just within the expanse while responding to a distress call from a freighter that had already been drawn into the same anomaly.

Excalibur had been forced to enter the anomaly to rescue both ships, which it did successfully.

However, when they re-emerged from it ... the year was 2407 with the anomaly promptly disappearing in their wake.
