BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Origins
Mykal Hayden Kaiwolf is a human Druid born in the 23rd century, cast like dice across a game board into the future.
His mother and father, Mari and Trystan Kaiwolf, were both themselves in Starfleet, although neither ever really sought to become more than junior officers (an engineer and science officers) who loved their work.
However, it was Mykal's grandmother, Carolyn Kaiwolf, who raised him on earth as his parents lived life out among the stars.
That's not to say that they deserted their son, only that their careers called for them to be away from the planet of their birth for months at a time.
They would make sure to visit their son whenever they could, both separately and together as time allowed.
And would send for him to join them for weeks at a time aboard their assigned ships ... When allowed.
But for much of his early life, he spent his time wandering the backwoods of Virginia.
It was from his grandmother, who was a member of the Bear Tribe Medicine Society, that Mykal learned to walk the pathways of the natural world, influenced by the ways of the Aniyvwiya (Cherokee) and the Lakota whom he was lucky enough to find elders of that shared some of their wisdom.
Some of his earliest and fondest memories were sitting around the fire, as part of the circle during her full moon ceremonies.
Even today, Mykal can close his eyes and clearly hear the rhythmatic beats of the drum, the sweat smell of the burning cedar (for smudging) and the smell of the smoke from the community fire.
He also remembers what it was like to hold the sacred ceremonial Pipe she carried. ... Not unlike the one he himself bears, yet different as the spirit of each Pipe differs from one to another.
Walking through the forests, however, was where he felt the most at home, and it came to a point that he could feel the living energy of live as it flowed around him.
Wandering in the wilderness taught him appreciation for the natural world around him.
Feeling the energy of the life there ... to appriciate the many forms of life themselves.
He learned to become a druid, but despite the lessons of his grandmother, he still walked a more solitary path, meaning much of what was taught or shared with him sank in was through his own life experiences.
It's how he learned to make it his own.
Finding Starfleet
His parents were only a small part of his decision to apply to Starfleet Academy.
Yes, it was nice to follow in the footsteps of his parents, however, it was the calling of the stars that caused this Druid to leave his beloved wilderness regions for the modern world of Starfleet.
He entered Starfleet and graduated within the top half of his graduating class in 2268 ... better than some, worse than others.
In fact, it should be noted that he actually graduated with Pavel Chekov.
Chekov was high enough in the class rankings that he landed a position on the Constitution-class U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701).
Mykal did not.
Settling In, Making Friends
He did land a position aboard the U.S.S. Drake (NCC-1381) as a flight control officer.
Another note of interest is that aboard the Drake, he served alongside fellow 2268 graduate, Danyl Hysmith.
He and Hysmith became good friends during their stint together aboard the Drake to the point that when Danyl was given command of a refitted Sombra-class U.S.S. Valkyrie (NCC-1790), he selected Mykal in 2273 for a department head position aboard ship ... Chief Security Officer.
The Road to Command
Danyl served aboard the Drake for 4 years, rising in rank, until finally offered a first officer position aboard the Loknar-class U.S.S. Sam Houston (NCC-4177) in 2277.
Five years later, he was offered command of the Sam Houston in 2282 after its previous captain accepted command of Deep Space 14.
It was actually his command of the Sam Houston where Mykal began to shine and gain the notice of those at Starfleet Command.
He commanded the Sam Houston for 6 years, proving himself several times as a capable ship's captain to the point those above him thought the officer ready for something bigger.
Path to the Future
In 2293, Starfleet Command promoted him to Commodore and pulled out the center chair of one of their new Matsumoto-class Command Dreadnoughts --- the U.S.S. Fenrir (NCC-5377).
Seven months after launch, the Avalon was coordinating task force operations near the Malstrom Expanse when a broken distress call came in from their sister ship, the U.S.S. Vanguard (NCC-5883).
Both ships ... Avalon and Vanguard ... were listed as lost following an extensive search and believed to have fallen victim to the perils of the Malstrom.
At least until 2407 when both ships reappeared within the Expanse, fully intact with no casualties plus one also intact freighter.
Now you see them, now you don't
The Vanguard had become caught within a gravitational anomaly just within the expanse while responding to a distress call from a freighter that had already been drawn into said anomaly.
Avalon had been forced to enter the anomaly to rescue both ships, which it did successfully.
However, when they re-emerged from it ... the year was 2407 with the anomaly promptly disappearing in their wake.
Finding a new path
There was no going back for him and his crew.
Instead, they found they had to acclimate to their new time, which some handled better than others.
The same was to be said for the crew of the Vanguard.
For Mykal Kaiwolf, it took just over six months for him to adjust, which he did by losing himself in his work.
As it happened, Starfleet realized they had two perfectly good starships on their hands ... a pair of dreadnoughts from a previous era.
Although the ships were no longer of a scale to still be considered dreadnoughts, they were the perfect platforms for a new type of explorer ... a command explorer at that.
The plan presented was to turn the Matsumoto class into a command multi-mission Cruiser.
Old ship, new mission
What this means is that these ships were to be designed to warp into new regions of space with a full complement of smaller craft, ranging from shuttles to fighters to runabouts to delta flyers.
While fighters would be used for recon, scouting and perimeter defense, the other craft would carry out the various missions designed and assigned to carry out.
When refitted, the Avalon would be able to enter a region of space and tackle a mission, such as detailed mapping and exploration of a given planetary system or region of space, from all sides with a wide net being cast via smaller craft (and sometimes other starships) command and coordinated by the Avalon herself.
Basically, they were going to use her to throw an entire explorer squadron at problems with the Avalon making it work.
Considering the refit of systems was to be extensive, Starfleet decided to alter the ship's registry by giving her the letter "A" after the number first emblazoned on her saucer.
The made her the U.S.S. Fenrir (NCC-5377-A).
The Interlude
Command kept their eye on Mykal and when they deemed him ready, they put him back in the centerseat as temporary commander of first the Engle-class Strike Wing Escort named U.S.S. Venerable (NCC-92384) and then the Inquiry-class Battlecruiser named U.S.S. Osprey (NCC-86745).
Being out there in command among the stars, felt good, but it did not stop Mykal from taking time to return to the wilderness ... shedding himself of all technology for a few months before and in preparation of his next command ... his return to the Avalon.
And once he returned the Avalon, he found himself truly ... himself.
And found that Starfleet had decided to promote him to the field rank of Vice Admiral.
Still captain of his ship, but an flag officer, none-the-less.
Finding self, Finding someone else
And although he still mourned the loss of family and friends who died a century, prior ... he still had the family that were his crew.
Often when not on duty, Mykal Kaiwolf can be found down in the ship's extensive arboretum (another perk from the refit) where he loses himself in the wilderness that exists aboard his home among the stars.
It should be noted that after he'd found peace in his soul, he met a woman quite by accident and was shocked to realize she also was someone misplaced in time ... although her time was somewhat before his.
Jennifer Sue Travanner Hysmith was her name, and she was a veteran of the First Klingon-Federation War.
And how he knew her name and the real shock was that she also happened to be the mother of his friend, Danyl Hysmith.
Although originally old enough to be his mother, a quirk of temporal displacement left Jeni and Mykal actually now about the same age.
It has taken time for Mykal to come to grips with the fact that he has fallen in love with his best friend's mother.

FAMILY LIFE
ITEMS OF NOTE
- Was born in the 23rd century.
- Graduated with Pavel Chekov
- Got drunk one time with Admirals Quinn and Janeway who had brought out a bottle of Neelix's Talaxian Moonshine to celebrate Mykal Kaiwolf's promotion and soon command of the refitted U.S.S. Avalon. It all went downhill after that second shot. The accordians and Klingon opera singing were third shot. And let's not talk about the fourth. To this day, the video footage of their ... performance ... still gets circulated around the fleet.
- Dates his best friend's mother from a over 100 years ago.
